African Rainbow Family at Parliament: Advocating for Decriminalisation Across the Commonwealth

On Thursday 14 May 2026, African Rainbow Family’s Founder and CEO, Aderonke Apata, attended a vital parliamentary reception at the Houses of Parliament in London. The event, titled “Last Chance for Love,” focused on the decriminalisation of homosexuality across the Commonwealth and was hosted by Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP on behalf of human rights defender Jason Jones.

The reception brought together a powerful collective of activists, legal experts, and community leaders to discuss the ongoing struggle for LGBTIQ+ liberation and decolonial justice.

Key highlights from the event included:

  • High-Level Advocacy: The event featured critical insights from Jason Jones (claimant in the landmark Privy Council case Jason Jones v. Attorney General of Trinidad and Tobago), Bell Ribeiro-Addy MP, and Lady Phyll (Co-founder and CEO of UK Black Pride).
  • Decolonial Justice: Discussions focused heavily on dismantling the harmful, colonial-era laws that continue to criminalise and persecute LGBTIQ+ individuals across various Commonwealth nations.
  • Solidarity with Global Majority Siblings: The reception provided a vital space to amplify the voices of activists working on the frontlines of human rights, aligning directly with African Rainbow Family’s mission to support people seeking asylum and refugees fleeing state-sanctioned homophobia.
  • Cross-Sector Collaboration: Engaging with organisations like the Good Law Project and the Caribbean LGBTQI Fund to strengthen the legal and grassroots networks necessary to protect vulnerable individuals globally.

Our presence at Westminster reinforces African Rainbow Family’s commitment to campaigning for racial justice and human rights, ensuring that our Siblings across the Commonwealth can live with the safety, freedom, and dignity they deserve.
